Abstract
Implementing kurikulum Merdeka has significantly changed how teachers
design and deliver lessons, presenting unique challenges for pre-service English
teachers who must navigate the complexities of learning to teach the innovative
requirements of the new curriculum during their practicum. While extensive research
has explored these challenges, a significant gap exists in understanding their specific
difficulties in designing lesson plans under this transformation.
Therefore, this research raises two research questions: (1) What are the
difficulties of pre-service English teachers in designing lesson plans based on kurikulum
Merdeka during their teaching practicum? and (2) How do pre-service English teachers
overcome those difficulties? Then, the research objectives are: (1) To explore the
difficulties of pre-service English teachers in designing lesson plans based on kurikulum
Merdeka during their teaching practicum. and (2) To explore ways to overcome those
difficulties.
This research used a qualitative approach and descriptive qualitative research design.
The study was conducted in one of the State Universities in Jember, East Java. The
participants were taken from three pre-service English teachers who have implemented
teaching practicum in the school that has applied kurikulum Merdeka in the 2023/2024
academic year. The data was collected from semi-structured and document reviews. For
data analysis, the researcher used a thematic analysis.
The findings revealed two significant themes addressing the difficulties faced by preservice English teachers (RQ1): (1) Conceptual difficulties in understanding and
implementing kurikulum Merdeka, particularly in formulating learning objectives and
outcomes, and (2) Practical difficulties in instructional design and implementation,
specifically in selecting appropriate learning materials, methods, media, and assessment
strategies. Several strategies were identified to overcome these challenges (RQ2). For
conceptual challenges, participants sought to deepen their understanding of curriculum
objectives and consulted with mentor teachers to better align objectives with learning
materials. To address practical challenges by a) utilizing digital resources, including
internet platforms and social media, to identify suitable learning references and b)
seeking guidance from experienced teachers in their practicum schools. These findings
underscore the critical need for enhanced pedagogical preparation programs that
specifically target the development of lesson planning competencies within the
kurikulum Merdeka framework to enhance pre-service English teachers‟ ability to
navigate curriculum transition effectively. Future research might explore the long-term
effectiveness of targeted pedagogical training interventions in addressing these
identified challenges.
