Abstract

Speaking is one of the key ability in expressing language orally. Speaking competence helps students in forming meaningful utterances to convey their ideas and thoughts through language. This ability is an important aspect that students must master as a basis for learning further languages. In the context of English, speaking competence has a very significant role. Therefore, the main objective of learning speaking competence is to develop students' ability to communicate effectively using English.
The purpose of this study is to improve students' speaking competence by using digital storytelling strategy through TikTok application in grade 10 SMA Negeri 3 Jember which has problems such as poor pronunciation, mother tongue interference, limited vocabulary, and poor grammar. These problems cause students to lack confidence and fear of making mistakes. This condition generally occurs due to a lack of speaking practice in the learning process. The research question of this study is How can the application of Tiktop application improve students' speaking competence at SMA Negeri 3 Jember?
This research uses Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research design is a collaborative CAR adapted from Stephen Kemmis and Robin Mc. Taggart (1988) which has four stages, namely, planning, implementation, observation and reflection. The participants of this study were 10th grade students of Senior High School 3 Jember, totaling 35 students. This research was conducted in 1 cycle with data collection techniques using observation, interviews, and speaking test. In this study there are several aspects of speaking that are assessed, namely, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and fluency. This research used content validity which involves English teachers as research validators. The success criteria of the research used are when all students reach 75% of the minimum completeness criteria (KKM) that it 75 determined by the school.
In the pre-cycle, the average score of students was 60.8, and only 8.57% or 3 students met the minimum completeness criteria (KKM) 75. After the cycle, the results showed that the average score of students' speaking competence was 79.8. Out of the total number of students, 30 students, or 85.71%, achieved the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) with a score of 75, while only 5 students did not reach the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM). It can be stated that this research was successful. Based on the results of observations and interviews, it can be concluded that the implementation of digital storytelling strategies with the tiktok application can improve students' speaking competence in English.
