Abstract
Mastering a language is very important as an access to communication,
especially English as an access to global communication. A language vocabulary
is basic component. The first step that students need to take before mastering all
aspects of English is learning vocabulary. Students often have difficulty in
English classes because of their lack of vocabulary. Students lack understanding
of synonyms and antonyms and their classifications in part of speech, as well as
spelling and meaning. Thus, researcher collaborated with English teacher to help
students improve vocabulary mastery by using Vocabulary Self-Collection
Strategy (VSS).
The research question of this research is "How can Vocabulary SelfCollection Strategy (VSS) as teaching strategy increase students' vocabulary
mastery at eight grade of SMP Darul Ulum Tempeh Lumajang". The objective of
this research is to examine how the Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) as
teaching strategy can increase students' vocabulary mastery at eight grade of SMP
Darul Ulum Tempeh Lumajang. Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was
modified from Kemmis & McTaggart, is the methodology used in this study.
Planning, action, observation, and reflection are the four phases of its
implementation. This research was conducted in two cycles. The researcher used
document review and observation to gather qualitative data. However,
quantitative data was gathered by means of a vocabulary test. 38 students from
eighth grade of SMP Darul Ulum Tempeh Lumajang participated in this study.
The findings of the research demonstrate that students' vocabulary mastery
can be increased by using the Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS),
particularly in the contexts of meaning, synonym, antonym, and part of speech
classification. Students' post-test results, which passed the success criterion of
74%, provide evidence of this statement. Therefore, it can be said that 28 of the
students who took the second cycle post-test have achieved the minimum passing
score (KKM). These findings indicate the assumption that students' vocabulary
mastery can be increased by using the Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS).
