Abstract
Speaking is a vital skill in English learning as it serves as a key medium for communication in both academic and daily contexts. However, many students face difficulties in developing their speaking performance, which can be influenced by personality traits. The contrast between extroverted and introverted personalities—reflecting how individuals respond to social interaction—plays a significant role in oral communication. Extroverts are generally more confident and expressive, while introverts tend to be more reserved, making it important to explore how these traits relate to speaking ability.
This study aims to examine whether there is a significant correlation between students’ personality types (extrovert and introvert) and their speaking performance at SMK 2 Pancasila. Recognizing that personality can influence speaking development, the research seeks to offer insights for educators and learners in designing strategies that accommodate individual differences in speaking instruction.
This research employed a quantitative correlational design involving 53 tenth-grade students from SMK 2 Pancasila. The instruments used were the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) to determine students’ personality types, and a speaking test to evaluate their performance based on grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and pronunciation. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation through SPSS 27.0, supported by validity and reliability testing for both instruments.
The result showed that there is a significant correlation between students’ personality types (extrovert - introvert) and speaking performance, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.553 and a significance level of p < 0. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It concluded that there was a strong enough correlation between students’ personality types ((extrovert-introvert) and speaking performance.
