Abstract

Arina Nur Holilah, 2025: EFL Students’ Challenges and Solutions in Understanding the Narrative Text ‘A Lonely Landy’ At the Second Grade of SMP Islam Darul Hidayah.
Key Words: students’ challenges, students’ solution, reading skill
Reading comprehension is one of the essential skills in English that plays a critical role in students’ academic success. However, students often face several challenges in understanding English texts, especially when English is taught as a foreign language. These challenges include limited vocabulary knowledge, lack of fluency, unfamiliarity with the subject matter, text complexity, weak verbal reasoning, difficulty in processing information, and problems recalling information after reading. Therefore, it is important to identify both the challenges faced by students and the solutions they use to overcome them in order to improve reading comprehension skills.
There were two research foci in this study, namely: 1) What are the challenges in reading English comprehension faced by second-grade students at SMP Islam Darul Hidayah? 2) What are the solutions used by the students to overcome these challenges in reading English comprehension faced by second-grade students at SMP Islam Darul Hidayah? The objectives of this research were to describe the challenges encountered by second-grade students in reading English comprehension and to identify the solutions they apply to overcome those challenges.
This research applied a case study design. The study was conducted at SMP Islam Darul Hidayah, with three student participants selected purposively based on the English teacher’s recommendation. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and document review. The data were analyzed through several stages: data collection, data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions. Data validity was ensured using source and technique triangulation.
The results of the study showed that students encountered several challenges in reading English comprehension, including limited vocabulary, lack of reading fluency, unfamiliarity with the topic, complex sentence structures, weak verbal reasoning, difficulty processing information, and problem in recalling information after reading. To address these issues, students used techniques such as predicting content, recognizing text structure, using visual representations, summarizing information, and applying questioning methods. These techniques serve as solutions to help students overcome the challenges they face in reading English comprehension.
