ABSTRACT

Siti Holila, 2026: Developing Animation Video as Learning Media for Student Reading
Comprehension of Narrative Text in Tenth Grade of Senior High School
Keywords: animation video, design-based research, learning media, narrative text,
reading comprehension
Reading comprehension is one of the important skills that students need to develop
in learning English, particularly in understanding narrative texts. Based on the preliminary
observation conducted at SMK Darur Rahmah, it was found that students showed diverse
levels of reading comprehension ability, especially in understanding vocabulary,
identifying generic structures, and interpreting detailed information within narrative texts.
In addition, the learning process could be further supported through the integration of
innovative learning media to create a more engaging and meaningful learning experience.
Therefore, animation video was developed as a learningِ mediumِ toِ supportِ students’ِ
reading comprehension.
This research objective is to describe 1). the design of animation video as
learningِmediaِforِstudents’ِreadingِcomprehensionِofِnarrativeِtext.ِ2).ِtoِdescribeِtheِ
quality of animation videoِ asِ learningِ mediaِ forِ students’ِ readingِ comprehensionِ ofِ
narrative text. Furthermore, the animation video is designed to assist students in
understanding vocabulary, identifying generic structures, recognizing detailed information,
and comprehending the content of narrative texts.
This research employed Design-Based Research (DBR) proposed by Reeves,
which consists of four stages: analysis of practical problems, development of solutions,
iterative testing and refinement, and reflection to produce design principles. The
participants of this research were 28 tenth-grade students and one English teacher at SMK
Darur Rahmah. The data were collected through observation, questionnaires, interviews.
The data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative and quantitative techniques.
The findings showed that the animation video was designed based on the results of
students’ِneedsِanalysis.ِTheِdevelopedِproductِwasِanِanimationِvideoِentitledِ“TheِFoxِ
andِTheِCat,”ِwhichِintegratedِmovingِanimation, narration, subtitles, sound effects, and
background music. The video was designed to support students in understanding
vocabulary, identifying generic structures, recognizing detailed information, and
comprehending the content of narrative texts. Furthermore, the quality of the developed
animationِvideoِwasِevaluatedِthroughِexpertِvalidation,ِstudents’ِresponses,ِandِteacherِ
responses. The questionnaire validation obtained a percentage score of 80% and was
categorized as Valid, while the interview validation obtained a percentage score of 84%
andِwasِcategorizedِasِVeryِValid.ِStudents’ِresponsesِrangedِfromِ84%ِtoِ95%ِandِwereِ
categorizedِasِVeryِGood.ِInِaddition,ِtheِteacher’sِresponseِobtainedِaِpercentageِscoreِ
of 89% and was categorized as Very Good. The interview results also indicated that the
animationِvideoِcontributedِpositivelyِtoِstudents’ِunderstandingِofِvocabulary,ِimportantِ
information, storyline comprehension, and learning motivation during reading activities.
Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the animation video was successfully
designedِ accordingِ toِ students’ِ learningِ needsِ andِ possessesِ goodِ qualityِ asِ learningِ
mediaِ forِ students’ِ readingِ comprehensionِ ofِ narrativeِ text.ِ Theِ developedِ animationِ
video is valid, feasible, attractive, and appropriate to be implemented in English learning
activities, particularly in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text.
