Abstract

Riadhatus Sholihah, 2026: The Influence of Wordwall as Game-Based Media on Students’ Writing Skill in Descriptive Text: A Quasi-Experimental Study at the Seventh Grade of SMP Islam Bustanul Ulum Pakusari
Keywords: Wordwall, game-based media, writing skill, descriptive text, quasi-experimental study
Writing is one of the essential skills in English learning, especially in writing descriptive texts. However, many students still experienced difficulties in developing ideas, organizing sentences, and using appropriate vocabulary and grammar. In addition, the use of less interactive teaching media made students less interested and motivated in learning writing. Therefore, interactive learning media were needed to help students improve their writing skill. This study focused on the use of Wordwall as game-based media in teaching writing descriptive text.
The research question of this study was “Is there any significant effect of using Wordwall as game-based media on students’ writing skill in descriptive text at the seventh grade of SMP Islam Bustanul Ulum Pakusari?” Based on the research question, the objective of this study was to investigate whether there was a significant effect of using Wordwall as game-based media on students’ writing skill in descriptive text.
This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental research design. The samples of this research were class VII F as the experimental class and class VII D as the control class. The data were collected through writing tests and documentation and analyzed using the Independent Sample T-test with SPSS Statistics. Before conducting the hypothesis testing, the researcher conducted normality and homogeneity tests. The results showed that the data were normally distributed and homogeneous because all significance values were higher than 0.05.
The findings showed that the students who were taught using Wordwall achieved better writing scores than those who were taught using conventional teaching media. The mean score of the experimental class was 77.03, while the control class was 66.41. In addition, the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) was < 0.001, which was lower than 0.05. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected. It indicated that there was a significant effect of using Wordwall as game-based media on students’ writing skill in descriptive text. The findings of this study imply that Wordwall can be used as an effective and interactive learning media to improve students’ writing skill, especially in teaching descriptive text.
