Abstract
Sakinatus Sa’idah, 2021: Students’ Difficulties in Writing Narrative Text on English Diary of The 8 th Grade at SMP Darut Tauhid Balung – Jember in the Academic Year of 2020-2021 Key Words: Students’ Difficulty, Narrative Text Writing Writing is an important skill in learning English, and it certains that many students have difficulty in writing skill. The researcher found some students that faced difficulty in writing at SMP Darut Tauhid Balung-Jember, and this research the researcher focused on students’ difficulties in writing narrative text. This research explored the students’ difficulty in writing narrative text. The students in SMP Darut Tauhid Balung-Jember got problem when they write especially in narrative text writing. The researcher interested in conducting research at this school because the school is relative new, and there has not been research conducted in this school before. The objectives of this research were 1) To describe the 8th grade students’ performances in writing generic structure of narrative text, 2) To describe the 8th grade the students’ performances in writing language feature of narrative text, 3) To explore the students’ difficulties in writing narrative text, and 4) To describe the solutions for students’ difficulty in writing narrative text. This research used qualitative research method and the type was descriptive analysis research. It was conducted at SMP Darut Tauhid BalungJember. The subject of research was an English teacher and second grade students of SMP Darut Tauhid Balung-Jember. The data were gathered by interview, and document review that from students’ worksheet of writing narrative text. To validate data, the researcher used source and method triangulation. The results of this research were: 1) The 8 th grade students’ performances in writing generic structure of narrative text was still difficult to decide the character and the problem in specific or detail way. 2) The 8 th grade students’ performances in writing language features of narrative text were: the students preferred used present tense than past tense, confused to differentiate between regular and irregular verb and also some of students preferred to write descriptive text than narrative text. 3) The students’ difficulties in writing narrative, were: the students difficult to express and develop their idea in writing narrative text, lack of students’ interest in reading activity, some of students had limited vocabulary so they could not build their ideas to write because they did not have enough vocabulary, student had difficulty in arranging the story, student difficulty to translated the text into English text and difficult in deciding to appropriate past tense. 4) The solutions for students’ difficulty in writing narrative text were: student should increase their reading activity at home or school and added their vocabularies, student should practice their writing consistently and student should require ask again if they did not understand well.
