Abstract

The use of teaching materials that seem rigid, lacking contextual relevance or actuality, exacerbates problems in teaching reading skills. This has led to a perception that learning Arabic, particularly reading skills, is difficult and monotonous. Based on this phenomenon, this study aims to develop teaching materials in the form of comics using a contextual approach to teach reading skills to students. The use of the contextual principle is intended to emphasize the meaningful connections between different parts of a text, making it easier for students to grasp the overall meaning of the story.
The objectives of this study are: 1) to describe the development of comics based on a contextual approach in teaching reading skills at MI Ar-Raudlah Sukorambi Jember; 2) to describe the validity of the developed contextual-based comics for teaching reading skills at MI Ar-Raudlah Sukorambi Jember; and 3) to describe the effectiveness of these contextual-based comics in improving reading skills at MI Ar-Raudlah Sukorambi Jember.
This study used a research and development (R&D) methodology, which involves processes and steps for developing new products or refining existing ones in a measurable way. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and document analysis. The sample for this research and development consisted of 24 second-grade students at MI Ar-Raudlah Sukorambi Jember. Data analysis techniques include descriptive analysis and t-tests.
The results of the study are as follows: 1) The educational media developed consists of comics based on a contextual approach for teaching reading skills, which were developed in four stages: preparing materials, characters, comic backgrounds, and color schemes. 2) The validity test results for the developed comics in Arabic language learning include assessments of the teaching media and the content. The content validity was measured at 87%, and the validity of the teaching media was measured at 90%. 3)The effectiveness test of the contextual-based comics in teaching reading skills showed an improvement of 19.62%, indicating that the development of these comics is effective and has a significant impact on enhancing students’ reading skills at MI Ar-Raudlah Sukorambi Jember.
