Abstract

Reading comprehension is an essential component of English learning, particularly at the literal level, which requires students to understand information explicitly stated in a text. Students’ learning environments can influence the development of this ability. In the Bina Bahasa class of MTs. Al-Amien Ambulu, Students living in the boarding school and students living at home receive the same English instruction but experience different learning environments and daily routines outside the classroom.
The research problem was formulated as follows: "Is there any significant difference in literal reading comprehension between students living in the Islamic boarding school and those living at home in the ninth-grade Bina Bahasa class at MTs. Al-Amien Ambulu?"
Based on the research problem, the objective of this study was to determine whether there is a significant difference in literal reading comprehension between students living in the Islamic boarding school and those living at home in the ninth-grade Bina Bahasa class at MTs. Al-Amien Ambulu.
This study employed a quantitative comparative research design. The population of the study consisted of ninth-grade students of the Bina Bahasa class at MTs. Al-Amien Ambulu. The sample involved 40 students, including 19 students living in a boarding school and 21 students living at home. The data were collected through a literal reading comprehension test covering indicators such as identifying details, understanding sequences, following written directions, and recognizing explicit cause-and-effect relationships. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality test, homogeneity test, and Independent Sample t-test through SPSS statistical software.
The findings of this study revealed that the calculated t-value from the independent-samples t-test was 4.401, exceeding the critical t-table value of 2.024. Moreover, the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) was 0.000, which was lower than the significance level of 0.05. These results indicate that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, while the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that there was a statistically significant difference in literal reading comprehension between ninth-grade students in the Bina Bahasa class at MTs. Al-Amien Ambulu who resided in the Islamic boarding school and those who lived at home. The findings further indicate that students residing in the Islamic boarding school achieved better literal reading comprehension than their peers living at home.
